In 1994 experienced toolmaker Wim Bouman set up a small workshop offering toolmaking and precision engineering.
The business rapidly grew and following customer demand, branched into production engineering.
Fifteen years later, Wim and his son Michael have just taken delivery of their fifth CNC machine with the arrival of a Challenger Microcut VM1000 machining centre from Total CNC. The Challenger joins two CNC lathes supplied by Total CNC and cements a long-term relationship built up between the two companies over many years.
Wim says, “I first met Rodney when he was selling cutting tools in Christchurch and was impressed with his knowledge and customer service.”
Four years ago when Custom Tooling was looking for a CNC lathe for turning large diameter moulds, he contacted Total CNC and purchased a Challenger BNC 2260X. Wim comments, “We weren’t just after the cheapest price, we wanted to deal with a company that could provide backup and service. Total CNC’s service has been tested and proven to be excellent.” When a second lathe was required for production work, Wim and his son Michael, who is now a co-director, did not hesitate in buying a Challenger T46 from Total CNC.
The latest arrival is once again a Challenger machine built to Custom Tooling’s specifications with an extended 600 mm Y axis and a Fanuc 21i MB control. Already the machine has proved its accuracy to Wim and Michael. “We recently machined a large three dimensional mould to a high finish which demonstrated to us the rigidity and accuracy of interpolation” says Wim. He was also impressed with the choice of machines available. “It is good to deal with a company that has a range of brands, we could have bought a Challenger, Victor or Kitamura machine from Total CNC but the Challenger suited our business best.”
Custom Tooling appreciated the extra effort put in by Total CNC’s South Island business development manager Duane Mundy to ensure the whole package would perform to expectations. Duane negotiated with the Challenger factory to fit the higher specification Fanuc 21iMB control to help with the 3D contour work they frequently do. The machine arrived over the Christmas period and Colin Hadfield, Total CNC’s South Island service manager helped install the machine so it was ready for work in the New Year.
Total CNC is a specialist in CNC machinery and accessories with quality brands backed by an experienced service team. With sales and service support staff based in the South Island, Total CNC is committed to providing South Island customers with the equipment, knowledge and backup they deserve.
