Victor Hydraulics in Christchurch is a World leader in the manufacture of hydraulic cylinders. Making stock cylinders from 1 1/2” to 12” and larger cylinders to order, they have met the threat of cheap imported product head-on by using design, innovation and stringent quality control to produce high performance cylinders. In 2001 when Victor Hydraulics was looking at buying a second CNC lathe they were approached by Total CNC who offered them a Victor lathe from Victor Taiwan. While the idea of Victor Hydraulics purchasing a Victor lathe seemed like a nice coincidence, it was Total CNC’s commitment to ensuring that all questions were rapidly answered that saw them clinch the order. The lathe was the first of six Victor machines purchased by Victor Hydraulics and the start of a strong relationship between the two companies.
Not only has Total CNC supplied CNC lathes and machining centres, they have helped Victor Hydraulics revolutionise their production methods to streamline manufacture and maximise efficiency. In consultation with Production Manager Willy Colenso, Total CNC has helped initiate many time saving strategies. Willy comments, “Total CNC really expanded our thinking as to what we could deliver from our machinery.”
To streamline short-run manufacture from their machining centres, Victor has invested in over forty thousand dollars worth of tools and tool holders to ensure each machine has the tooling for every operation instantly available. Total CNC supplied a tool setting machine to keep the VMCs machining rather than measuring and each machine has over four hundred offsets stored so that as every production order arrives the job can be started immediately. Tools are loaded as required during the first run which has proved another time saver.
Jergens ball-lock fixture systems have been installed in the beds of the machining centres and 4th axis tables. These allow work-holding jigs to be rapidly positioned and clamped, saving clocking up time. Many of the jigs are fitted with Total CNC’s OK-Vice low profile clamps to speed up product installation and removal.
Total CNC also supplied Victor with Earth Chain lifting magnets to help with the handling of heavy billets, improving efficiency and operator safety.
